That came into view for several reasons. First, I began my life with a good dose of it growing up in Georgia--heart-felt preaching often accompanied by shouting in the pews. Then I attended Bob Jones University and sat under the legendary Bob Jones Sr., an old time southern evangelist. One of the mottos of BJU over the years has been that they "stand without apology for the old time religion and the absolute authority of the Bible."

I started out in Southern Baptist churches but was caught off guard during the fifties (as many were) as some of the SBC seminaries began to drift into liberal theology. Because of that I worked for many years in independent Baptist churches, often in the militant fundamentalist camp. In faithfully serving these churches I worked hard for the cause of Christ, serving in many areas, on boards and committees, and for a time was the research editor for a national denominational paper. I sincerely believed in what I did.

As time went by I began to have questions and concerns. While my son attended Liberty University in the 80s one of his professors was a former college classmate of mine named Ed Hindson. He told my son "if I would ride in the same car with him" (jokingly referring to a belief fundamentalists have about separation from wrong), he would spend a day with me and discuss the differences that had arisen between fundamentalists and evangelicals.

Well, I took him up on it and the rest, as they say, is history. Along the way I, along with Thomas Road Baptist Church, am once again associated with the Southern Baptists (Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia). The late Jerry Falwell enjoyed telling people that when he "found me" I was writing articles criticizing him. True enough.

Because of this multi-layered background, plus an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Wisconsin, I have been uniquely "branded" and proudly admit to the "old-time religion" label.
"Give me that old time religion, tis the old time religion, tis the old time religion, and it's good enough for me.
It was good for our fathers, it was good for our fathers, it was good for our fathers and its good enough for me.
Give me that old time religion, tis the old time religion, tis the old time religion, and it's good enough for me.
It was good for Paul and Silas, it was good for Paul and Silas, it was good for Paul and Silas,
it's good enough for me.
Give me that old time religion, tis the old time religion, tis the old time religion, it's good enough for me!"
